You are now in the thick of things and for most of us this will be one of the hardest topics. The reality is that many of us don't see a great deal of complicated hand injuries in clinical practice. OTs and CHTs tend to capture these patients and limit our clinical experience. Fortunately (or unfortunately if you are a hand expert) the wrist/hand only make up 5% of questions.
Like most weeks, start off by taking the quiz, surveying the mind maps, and then review the 2 required lectures (Tendon Rehabilitation and Differential Diagnosis) and the 4 articles for the week (see below).
Diagnosing Wrist Pain: Forman 2005
Non-Emergent Evaluation of Hand and Wrist: Daniels 2004
Joint Protection and Exercises in Hand OA: Stamm 2002
Treatment of CTS: Akalin 2002
As you explore the mindmaps and read the articles, take notes on the 1 page summary sheet for the week or in your notebook. Pay special attention to the differentiation between Carpal Tunnel syndrome and cervical radiculopathy, the 'named' hand deformities and the basics of protecting tendon repairs after surgery.
You are now 6 miles into your marathon race (out of 26.2 for those of you non-runners) and hopefully settling into a groove.
